Butterflies, I gotz 'em

Ok, so my first foray into the world of running in a real-live race-type situation is QUICKLY approaching. Lord, have mercy, I cannot tell you how quickly it's approaching from where I'm sitting. Lest I haven't babbled on and on and on about it enough and you've forgotten, the race is this Saturday, September 27, at 8:00 a.m. I am so dingdang nervous that it's not even funny.

To help my nerves (get better or worse, I don't know...), I Googled "ran my first 5K" and started reading all the stories that Google brought back to me. I just heart Google! I'm very inspired and encouraged by the stories I've read so far. I think I made it to page 3 or 4, so I've got more reading to do.

I've also read articles and researched things I should be doing before the race. What to eat the day/night before? What to eat/drink/wear/sing/shout/hide the day of the race? I've contacted the lady in charge of it all and am waiting for her to return my call. I want to make sure I know where to go, what to do, what's the race route, etc. I'm just a little obsessive-compulsive, but not much. Ok, maybe very much but who's counting? Counting isn't really my thing, so if it's yours, more power to you.

Also, another fun thing is that Nick has his first flag football game Saturday. We don't yet know what time, but it will definitely be in the morning. I believe last year that games were at 9a and 11a on Saturdays. I am PRAYING like crazy that his game is the 11a which would let me do my run, come back and shower/die, and then go to the game. If it's the 9a, we're in trouble and I don't have a solution.

Oh, and last Saturday I got some real, live, true running shoes! Things didn't quite go as planned in obtaining them, but sometimes life just doesn't go as planned. I wanted to go to Springfield to a real running store and actually get fitted for running shoes. From what I understand and have read (research, gotta love it!), when you get fitted for running shoes, you go to the store and the people will watch or videotape you running to monitor your gait. There are underpronators, overpronators, and regular, old pronators. I don't know which is which but it has to do with the way you push off as you run and how your foot rolls. I don't think I under or overpronate, but I've never watched me run. I had planned to spend anywhere from $50 - $100 on a good pair of shoes. I also prepared Mai Ling for this expense so he wouldn't have a stroke or something. I had received payment for working on a website, along with some survey/research checks I had received, so I had plenty of casharoonie.

The only thing I didn't have was time. Time, time, you nefarious enemy of mine. I totally made that up, but it's an awesome quote, isn't it? Feel free to use it. Spread it around. Let's make it the new catchphrase with all the kids, shall we?

Anyhoo...turns out Alex had an away football game at 11a, Mike had to work some overtime, and I had a 10a meeting. The running store was only open until 5p, so there was just no logistical way for me to get there. I had no choice but to turn to the local Hibbett Sports for help. They didn't do the fitting or anything, but they did have the brand I wanted - Asics. I found a style that I liked, they had in my size, and it was on SALE, SALE, SALE! And I had signed up for the Hibbett MVP rewards deal and got another 20% off. Sweet! Here's the link to my new kicks, if you're interested. I got the White/Steel Grey/Iced Mint.

I'm nervous, but I'm ready to try my best and hardest. If I finish in less than an hour, I'll be happy! Hell, if I FINISH, I'll be happy! Man, I cannot wait until this is over so I'll know how I did!

Weight loss update: lost 0.8 lbs last night, bringing my weight down to 235.4 lbs

I think it is totally normal to be nervous. Heck, it's your first time ... butterflies are totally allowed! All you can do is your best & as I said before "Run your butt off!!!" I know you can do it.

ps. Your new kicks are quite stylin'!

Fantastic! I am so excited for you...5k! Yay! I am sure those butterflies are normal...if you didn't have them I would probably worry! :) I am putting it on my calendar so I can remember and send good vibes!

And when you have time to actually get fitted for shoes DO IT! It is fantastic. Really. Of course the shoes are usually a bit more than one wants to or would usually spend, but it is so worth it. I promise. I haven't gotten good, fitted to me shoes for several years...I think I may go again. You have inspired me!

Hey girl! You are rockin'!

I love, Love, LOVE the shoes! And I can't wait to read your write-up after the race. I swear, you are going to feel so good about yourself, no matter what your time!

I ran a 5K once (ONCE) in my life (about a year ago), and while I thought I might die a hard, lung-burning death during the last 10 minutes, I somehow made it through. And you have no idea how wonderful I felt afterwards! And that's exactly why I haven't ran another one since. How could I possibly top that?! :-0

Best of luck!!

P.S. I hope that you get a wonderful t-shirt to add to your collection. Please post pictures.
